Foreign students who receive a French state grant have priority for a room in a university residence. Important: you must apply via the French Embassy before you arrive in France.
The different types of university accommodation
Student accommodation is managed by the CROUS (Centre Régional des Oeuvres Universitaires et Scolaires). To visit the site click here. This accommodation is inexpensive and of good quality. Furthermore, the overall atmosphere is excellent since there are plenty of students. This is an ideal accommodation solution for foreign students: immersion guaranteed!
There are several types of accommodation in university residences:
- furnished individual rooms: 9 m² surface area, collective kitchens, study rooms and bathrooms and toilets (about 150 € per month);
- studios through to 2 room (T2) flats: from 21 to 31 m², with kitchen and bathroom and toilet in each flat (about 250 € for a T1).
Worth knowing: once you are in France, you may be eligible to apply for student accommodation financial help; this represents about a quarter of the rent.
When should you apply for student accommodation?
When you apply for your grant, ask at the French Embassy or Consulate for information about student accommodation.
A limited number of places available
Each year the number of demands is greater than the number of places available. Even if you apply early, you are not guaranteed a place in university accommodation when you arrive in France.
- Students receiving a grant: you have priority.
- Students not receiving a grant: you may obtain accommodation in a university residence if there are still places remaining. If not, you need to find accommodation in town. See the different types of accommodation in France
