Reimbursement
Foreign students > Reimbursement
Medical treatments are reimbursed in part by the social security scheme. The Vitale card provides all the information required for reimbursements.
Reimbursement of medical expenses
When to go to your regular GP, the Social security scheme will reimburse part of your medical expenses. What do you need to do? It is very easy: present your Vitale card to the doctor and at the chemist’s.
Social security reimbursements: principle
For any medical act, the Social security will reimburse part of the amount paid to its social security scheme affiliates. For example, a consultation with your GP is reimbursed 70 % while medicines are reimbursed between 15% and 65%.
You inform your Social security centre of your treatments via your Vitale card; the Social security centre will reimburse you directly by payment into your bank account.

How to use your Vitale card
It is very easy: you just present the card to the GP or chemist. The card chip contains your personal data (Social security number, surname, first name). The GP and chemist are equipped with an electronic terminal which transfers the information to the social security centre. You are then reimbursed directly by payment into your bank account.

Direct settlement system
When the doctor or chemist uses the direct settlement system, you do not have to pay the social security part. This means that for a consultation with your regular doctor who uses the direct settlement system you will only pay the 30% of the consultation fee that is not reimbursed by the social security scheme. The social security centre reimburses the doctor directly.
Private top-up healthcare: to be reimbursed 100%
The Social security scheme does not reimburse medical expenses 100%. Private top-up healthcare completes the social security scheme reimbursements.
To stay in control of your healthcare budget, we recommend you take out private top-up healthcare so your medical expenses are reimbursed 100%. The SMENO proposes 4 top-up healthcare programmes intended especially for students: guarantee M, guarantee L, guarantee XL and guarantee XXL.
